Hit the Road
Brandon Wilmoth, RutWear Field Expert
Do you ever wonder why the same guys always get the biggest deer, limit out on ducks each day, and can go upland hunting and are finished by noon? There are many aspects to having successful hunts and one key part is hitting the road. To be a successful hunter you have to go locations nobody ventures and are there at the right time.
I have a core group of individuals that I hunt with who understand the fact that hitting the road is the best way for us to be successful hunters. You can be in the best trees or ponds but if the wildlife is not there it can turn into watching trees grow while armed.
When we hit the road we do so in different vehicles this allows us the opportunity to scout more places and be in various locations at different times. This has proven to a very successful method due to one vehicle having the ability to drive by a place thirty minutes following the first vehicle and seeing the trophy buck or the mallard's dive bombing a water hole. By having different scouting options this has increased our successful hunting adventures. We have learned the back roads like they are Route 66 and can explain to the other vehicle the field we need to hunt by the house two miles away or the odd looking tree in the field.
At times this has become to successful, as each vehicle will find a money field, track down the farm or land owner, get permission, and then call the other vehicle and they have done the same on another field. Having two good fields to hunt is not necessarily a bad thing but picking which property to hunt usually comes down to a coin flip.
To be a successful hunter you must put in the leg work and know where the game your hunting can be found. By hitting the road you will be able to locate these areas and your hunts will be more successful. Also, don't be afraid to break up from your hunting buddies and check different areas when scouting, the more ground you can cover on a scouting trip the better.
