Gregory H. Hubbell
2008 World Elk Bugling Champion

I've had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. From catching my first trout on a cane pole at 3 years old with my dad and brothers, to hunting trophy mule deer with my 13-year-old son to 13,000 feet this last fall in Colorado.

I have over 70 big game kills unguided. I have hunted wild boar, sheep, antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, blacktail deer, waterfowl, upland game, and boast an 85% success rate on bull elk unguided on public land. I am a grunt hunter, a meat hunter except I hunt with a muzzleloader for trophy mule deer. My best is a 195 1/2 gross B&C mule deer. I backpack in and backpack out, meat and all (except once, last time I hunted elk. I am getting old now at 52, so I rented a horse and almost killed myself). I have been backpacking to fish for almost 40 years. Going map and compass over 50 miles no trails one trip, and many other 20-mile map and compass trips. I have done a 72-mile trip, couple of 64 milers, couple of 56 milers, a 50 miler, and too many under that to list.

My passion has been elk hunting. I hunted with local guys (my best friend from high school Aaron Yasunaka moved there) I call the "Colorado Crazies". I learned a lot about the proper gear, clothing, how to survive while trekking out into vast areas looking for elk. If you ever get lost or stuck, you have to know how to survive and carry it in your pack along with your rifle. Living in California, I learned how to train for trips that would take me from sea level up to 12,500 feet with these guys who lived at 9-10,000 feet, and be competitive with them. They also taught me about nutrition to keep going and I adapted and added a few good ideas of my own.

I like to think I am a hardcore outdoorsman, but there are guys who do what I do with a bow and arrow, and I respect them the most. When I first started calling and hunting elk, my partners said I sounded like an elk, a sick elk! Now I am the 2008 World Elk Bugling Champion and the proud father of Greg Hubbell Jr, a 5 time World Elk Bugling Champion, World Duck Calling Champion, and he is the only person to EVER win both a reed style (Duck or Goose) and a diaphragm style (Turkey or Elk) World Championship. My son and I have teamed up with RutWear because of their innovation and commitment to quality. Things that could save your life one day by keeping you dry, from hypothermia, comfortable in the heat, comfortable when the wind blows, temperature drops, or the sky bursts with rain. Or like my last hunt when we had to walk through 7 foot willows (no trail) covered with wet snow, snowing wet snow, early in the morning, and cold. When you reach up to move those willows the last thing you want is cold water running down your arms to your back because you had elastic or snaps keeping your arm sleeves closed and it did not keep the moisture out. It makes for a long cold miserable day when your waterproof system fails, and it could cost you a trophy or even worse, your life. I look forward to working with RutWear, field testing, sharing ideas, and helping to develop products that will perform in the best or worst circumstances to make sure that we enjoy the hunt, and get back alive.
